Weekend Off - Part II

One of the problems of living up here is the weather, to say it can be a little depressing is an understatement. Couple that with living with depression, not very good. Yesterday was not a good day, weather wise and so not a good depression wise. This meant that I could not write this until today, a sunny & bright day.

You may think, "what is this guy, suffering from depression, doing supporting Sunderland. It must make him worse." Well it does not help. When I was first diagnosed with depression in 1997, I thought I would cheer myself up and watch us play against Reading away. Easy game, wrong !!!! We lost 4-0 against Reading of all teams, this was before their push for PL status. After that result you lucky/unlucky (delete as appropriate) that i am still here. Anyway I digress.

Shall we skip the match without strikers, Bruce seemed as if he did. I could not watch it as I found no live link, how pleasing that was. For you fans that travelled down and got back at some unearthly hour in the morning, don't you wish you were an exiled mackem too?

The last day of the transfer window was a little fraught. Bruce had changed his tune and said we needed a striker, not of course that we had not needed one since Bent had left 8 months ago. Some people take a little more time to realise these things. So who during these 8 months had we been looking at, sounding out the clubs as to if they would be available in August? The answer seems to of been Bendtner.   I am actually quite pleased that we have him on loan. He has the potential to be a good player, if you speak to him he is a great player. If we play him often, give him a good run out, he may surprise a few of his doubters. I don't believe that he was on our radar until the closing days of the window. I think it was Crouch who we were after. A player who had twice turned us down and who Short had insulted. What were the chances of him changing his mind, forgiving Short, telling his partner/wife that she had to move to wearside, it was his job?

The folly of not getting another striker in was seen at Brighton and may of been seen at the Chelsea game, if Gyan has not recovered from the injury suffered whilst playing for Ghana. Ji & Whickham are good buys too but not for the present. We will see more of them as the season goes on but they are for the future, the striking problem was now. To play them on Saturday would be folly, as much of a folly as when during the bad run a couple of seasons ago we started at Chelsea with Waghorn. We all remember how that ended and maybe harmed Waghorn's development.

I did get very wound up during the last days due to some journalist reporting that we were trying to offload Gyan if we got a striker in. Hard to believe but when so many of them were saying it and the anxiety of being alone with twitter it is easy to get carried away. The worrying thing is the rumours have still not gone, January maybe another worrying month. Could be a catch22, Gyan improves and starts scoring again, more clubs want him. He does not score that many, the fans on his back, get disillusioned and wants off. We need to forget that we put our trust in Bent and he threw it back at us. Let put our trust in Gyan, believe what he says and support him to the hilt.

Now should I be sat here writing this or outside in the sun, on our best day in weeks. The temp must be 15C by now. Stupid question bye for now. Hope you enjoyed this. Please let me know, Caithness is a lonely place for a Makem. Only 2 that i know of and never met them yet. Drop me a comment or a line.
